Obiettivi: Workplace communication in corporate and institutional settings
The course is aimed at introducing the concept of intercultural communication and workplace communication skills. In particular, after a short analysis of the 4 basic skills and communication styles, professional communication skills will be practised as follows:
Reading: skimming and scanning newspaper articles, memos, notices and messages.
Writing: memos, formal letters, e-mails, reports, Cvs.
Listening: short telephone conversations and teleconferencing, discussions and presentations.
Speaking: giving a presentation, negotiating, participating in meetings.

Short course description english flag

The course is aimed at introducing the concept of intercultural communication and workplace communication skills. In particular, after a short analysis of the 4 basic skills and communication styles, professional communication skills will be practised as follows:
Reading: skimming and scanning newspaper articles, memos, notices and messages, text analysis.
Writing: emails, memos, formal letters, reports, CVs and cover letters.
Listening: short telephone conversations and teleconferencing, discussions and presentations.
Speaking: giving a presentation, negotiating, participating in meetings.

Programma Unità didattica 1:

An Introduction to English as a Global Language and ESP
English as a lingua franca. LSPs, registers and genres. Discourse and genre in social and professional contexts. Intercultural issues. Language skills: reading, writing, listening, speaking, translating.

Prerequisiti e modalità di esame Prerequisites and exam format
The entry level of English competence required is B1 (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages).
The English competence expected at the end of the course is B2 (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages). However, B2 competence in itself is not sufficient as it needs to be integrated with specific research and business communication skills, as described in the programme. Accordingly, no international certification will be accepted as a substitute for any part of the exam.

The exam is written and includes:
1. Language check (grammar, vocabulary) with open /close questions.
2. Test with open/close exercises on course content and skills.
3. Information transfer: listening with close exercises.
