Obiettivi: This course offers a general introduction to sociology. The objectives for students are to understand the vocabulary of sociology; acquire sociology's core concepts and theoretical perspectives; develop a sociological understanding of the relationship between individuals, groups and social institutions; discuss social processes underpinning social change and social stability.

This is an introductory course, mainly aimed at giving a synthetic view of the main sociological fields: focussing on fundamental sociological concepts, on the specific scientific language and on the different sociological topics. It is also intended to offer a general frame to other classes of applied sociology that students will meet in the following years.
The course is articulated in three parts of 20 hours each corresponding to three large thematic areas:
1. Foundations of Cultural Sociology
2. Foundations of Political Sociology
3. Foundations of Economic Sociology

Cultural Sociology
Overview of the main sociological paradigms. The question of Social Change and the birth of modernity. Social organization and the formation of personality, the self. Deviance.

Prerequisiti e modalità di esame The exam is written. It will consist of four open theoretical questions based on the material presented in class. The answers will be evaluated on a scale interval 0-30. The oral exam is allowed only if the written test is passed. It is not mandatory. There will be a mid term exam and a final exam. The final score will be the average of the midterm and final scores.

The students that take the course for 3 credits may choose one of the three sections (moduli) and they are responsible for the program requested in the section. They have to consider the program requested to those who do not attend the class. It is requested that the students notifies the teacher the section chosen. Those who take the exam for 6 credits may choose two of the three sections (moduli) and they are responsible for the program requested in the sectios. Those who take the exam for 9 credits, are responsible for the all program. Those who take the exam for 12 credits are responsible for the all program plus the reading Norbert Elias, Power and Civility (The Civilization Process vol 2), section IV.
